D&D and Me
I first started playing D&D around 1992 (then called Advanced D&D, now referred to as 2e) We were just a handful of friends trading off who was the DM and making up dungeons. The plot was rarely more involved than “some guy told you to look in this cave”, but we had fun.
After 1995 we stopped, and I honestly didn’t think of it again until the Mystery Science Theater 3000 Kickstarter (my other big fandom) plugged the Critical Role Kickstarter in 2019. I was pleased and surprised that people still played D&D, and apparently made shows about it… but also that sounded boring to watch and I didn’t bother.
A year latee a podcast I listen to started a D&D actual play, and… I was blown away. This wasn’t the “go in this cave and hit that monster” game that we had played so long ago. There was depth, story-telling, humor… I never knew it could be that.
And of course post-2020 I had lots of extra time to consume Critical Role, Dimension 20, and whatever else I could get my hands on. I finally joined an online D&D game, and once comic book stores starting opening back up found a local group.
A year later I decided to return to DMing, but this time armed with a much better understanding of what I wanted the game to be.
My Style
I believe the DM/GM is there to help the players tell the story. I want to put challenges in front of you, I want success and failure to both be options, but I do believe that ultimately I am there to contribute to a heroic tale.
